Andalusia is the Spain of popular imagination -- flamenco, whitewashed villages, Moorish palaces, and sun-baked landscapes. A road trip is the best way to experience this region's incredible diversity.

Day 1-2: Seville

Start in Seville, Andalusia's passionate capital. Visit the Real Alcazar, a stunning Moorish palace still used by the Spanish royal family. Explore the Gothic cathedral with its Giralda tower, and wander through the atmospheric Barrio de Santa Cruz. In the evening, catch an authentic flamenco show in Triana and enjoy tapas along Calle Betis overlooking the Guadalquivir River.

Day 3: Cordoba

Drive northeast to Cordoba (1.5 hours). The Mezquita, a mosque-cathedral with over 850 striped arches, is one of Spain's most extraordinary buildings. Explore the Jewish Quarter, cross the Roman Bridge, and enjoy salmorejo for lunch. The courtyards of Cordoba are famous -- visit during the Patio Festival in May if possible.

Day 4-5: Granada

Continue to Granada (2.5 hours) for the trip's highlight: the Alhambra. Book tickets months in advance, as they sell out quickly. The Nasrid Palaces are breathtaking, and the Generalife gardens offer a peaceful retreat. Explore the Albaicin neighborhood for its winding streets and panoramic views. At night, visit a cave flamenco show in Sacromonte and enjoy free tapas in the city's many bars.

Day 6: The Alpujarras

Take a detour into the Alpujarras, a series of whitewashed villages clinging to the southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada. Pampaneira, Bubion, and Capileira offer spectacular mountain scenery, traditional crafts, and hearty mountain cuisine. This is hiking territory at its finest.

Day 7: Malaga

Head south to the coast and Malaga (2 hours from the Alpujarras). This port city has transformed into a cultural hotspot with the Picasso Museum, Centre Pompidou Malaga, and a revitalized historic center. The Atarazanas market is excellent for fresh seafood, and the beachfront chiringuitos serve the best espetos (grilled sardines).

Day 8: Ronda

Drive inland to Ronda (1.5 hours), one of Spain's most dramatically situated towns. The Puente Nuevo bridge spans the 120-meter El Tajo gorge, offering vertigo-inducing views. Explore the old town, visit one of Spain's oldest bullrings, and enjoy lunch with gorge views.

Day 9: White Villages

Spend a day driving through the Pueblos Blancos (White Villages) route. Zahara de la Sierra, Grazalema, and Arcos de la Frontera are particularly photogenic. These hilltop villages preserve a traditional Andalusian way of life, with excellent local restaurants and artisan shops.

Day 10: Cadiz or Jerez

Finish your trip at the coast. Cadiz claims to be Europe's oldest continuously inhabited city, with beautiful beaches and a vibrant old town. Alternatively, visit Jerez de la Frontera for sherry tastings and the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art.

Practical Tips

Renting a car is essential for this trip. Roads are well-maintained, and distances are manageable. Book accommodation in advance during spring and early autumn. Carry cash for smaller villages where cards may not be accepted. Start early in summer to avoid the worst heat.
