Choosing the right time to visit Spain can make or break your trip. With its diverse climates ranging from the green, rainy north to the arid south and subtropical Canary Islands, timing matters. Here is a detailed breakdown to help you plan.

Spring (March to May)

Spring is arguably the best time to visit Spain. Temperatures are comfortable, ranging from 15 to 25 degrees Celsius across most of the country. The countryside is lush and green, wildflowers bloom across Andalusia, and crowds are manageable. This is the season for Semana Santa (Holy Week) celebrations, particularly spectacular in Seville and Malaga. The Feria de Abril in Seville follows shortly after, offering a vibrant display of flamenco, horses, and traditional dress.

Summer (June to August)

Summer means peak tourist season, especially along the Mediterranean coast and the Balearic Islands. Expect temperatures above 35 degrees in Madrid, Seville, and Cordoba. Beach destinations like the Costa Brava, Costa del Sol, and Mallorca are at their busiest. Prices for accommodation can double during July and August. However, summer is ideal for northern Spain, where the Basque Country and Galicia enjoy pleasant temperatures around 25 degrees with less humidity.

Autumn (September to October)

Autumn rivals spring as the best time for travel. The intense summer heat subsides, the sea is still warm enough for swimming, and hotel prices drop. September is perfect for Barcelona, the Balearic Islands, and coastal Andalusia. Wine harvest season in La Rioja and Catalonia offers unique experiences. October brings pleasant temperatures for hiking in the Picos de Europa or exploring cities without the summer crowds.

Winter (November to February)

Winter in Spain is mild compared to the rest of Europe, particularly along the southern coast and in the Canary Islands where temperatures rarely dip below 18 degrees. Madrid and inland cities can be cold, with occasional snow in the mountains. This is the cheapest time to visit, with accommodation prices at their lowest. The Sierra Nevada near Granada offers excellent skiing from December to April. Christmas markets appear in major cities, and New Year celebrations are especially festive.

Regional Considerations

Canary Islands are a year-round destination with temperatures between 20 and 28 degrees regardless of season. Northern Spain (Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria, Basque Country) is rainier but green and beautiful, best visited from June to September. Andalusia is best in spring or autumn when temperatures are bearable. Barcelona and the Mediterranean coast shine from May to October.

Our Recommendation

For first-time visitors, we recommend late April through early June or September through mid-October. You will enjoy warm weather, fewer crowds, reasonable prices, and the full range of Spanish experiences from beaches to cultural festivals.
