Train Travel in Spain: A Complete Guide to Renfe and AVE
Spain has one of Europe's best high-speed rail networks, making train travel an efficient and scenic way to explore the country. The national operator Renfe runs everything from bullet trains to commuter services.
The AVE High-Speed Network
The AVE (Alta Velocidad Espanola) is Spain's pride, connecting major cities at speeds up to 310 km/h. Key routes include Madrid to Barcelona (2 hours 30 minutes), Madrid to Seville (2 hours 20 minutes), Madrid to Malaga (2 hours 25 minutes), and Madrid to Valencia (1 hour 40 minutes). The AVE network continues to expand, with new routes opening regularly.
Types of Trains
AVE: High-speed trains between major cities. Comfortable, punctual, and with guaranteed arrival time refunds if delayed more than 15 minutes. Alvia and Euromed: Medium-distance trains connecting cities not on the AVE network. Cercanias: Commuter trains serving metropolitan areas, useful for getting around Madrid, Barcelona, and other cities. Media Distancia: Regional trains connecting smaller towns, slower but more affordable.
Booking Tips
Book early for the best prices. AVE tickets can cost as little as 20 EUR one-way when purchased well in advance, compared to 80-120 EUR for last-minute fares. The Renfe website and app allow booking up to 120 days ahead. Consider the Renfe Spain Pass, which offers 4, 6, 8, 10, or 12 journeys within one month at a fixed price, ideal for travelers planning multiple train trips.
Budget Alternatives
AVLO is Renfe's low-cost high-speed service on the Madrid-Barcelona and Madrid-Valencia routes, with fares starting around 7 EUR when booked early. Iryo, a private competitor, also operates high-speed trains on popular routes with competitive pricing. Ouigo, the French low-cost operator, runs services between Madrid and Barcelona as well.
Station Tips
Major stations like Madrid Atocha, Barcelona Sants, and Seville Santa Justa are well connected to metro and bus networks. Arrive at least 20 minutes before departure for AVE trains, as there is a security screening. Most stations have luggage storage facilities, cafes, and shops.
Scenic Routes
For spectacular scenery, consider the Transcantabrico luxury train through northern Spain's Green Coast, or the Al Andalus route through Andalusia. The regular train from Barcelona to the Costa Brava hugs the coastline beautifully. The route from Malaga to Ronda winds through dramatic mountain gorges.
Practical Information
All AVE trains offer free WiFi, power outlets, and a cafe car. Turista class is perfectly comfortable, while Preferente offers wider seats and included meals. Children under 4 travel free, and ages 4-13 receive a 40% discount. Bikes can be taken on most long-distance trains in a bike bag.
Spain's train network makes it possible to see the country's highlights without renting a car, saving you the stress of driving and parking in busy cities.
