Best Hiking Trails in Spain: From Mountains to Coast
Spain's diverse geography makes it a hiking paradise, with trails ranging from gentle coastal walks to challenging mountain ascents. Here are the best hiking destinations across the country.
Picos de Europa
This limestone massif in northern Spain offers some of the country's most dramatic mountain scenery. The Cares Gorge trail (Ruta del Cares) is the most popular, a 12 km path carved into cliff faces above a deep canyon. It is relatively flat despite the dramatic setting, making it accessible to most fitness levels. The Fuente De cable car provides access to high-altitude trails with sweeping views across Cantabria and Asturias.
The Pyrenees
Spain's border with France offers endless hiking possibilities. The Ordesa Valley in Aragon is often called Spain's Grand Canyon, with spectacular waterfalls and towering limestone walls. The Cola de Caballo (Horsetail Waterfall) trail is a classic day hike. In Catalonia, the Aiguestortes National Park features alpine lakes, glacial valleys, and diverse wildlife. The GR11 traverses the entire Spanish Pyrenees from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic.
Sierra Nevada
Located just south of Granada, the Sierra Nevada contains mainland Spain's highest peak, Mulhacen (3,479 m). The summer ascent is non-technical but demanding, rewarding hikers with views stretching to the Mediterranean and even Africa on clear days. Lower altitude trails through the Alpujarras villages combine mountain hiking with cultural discovery.
El Caminito del Rey
This former workers' path, pinned to the walls of a narrow gorge near Malaga, was once considered the world's most dangerous walkway. Now restored with modern walkways and safety features, it offers a thrilling 7.7 km experience with vertigo-inducing sections above the 100-meter deep gorge. Advance booking is required and sells out quickly.
Canary Islands
Tenerife's Teide National Park offers lunar landscapes around Spain's highest peak (3,718 m). The Masca Valley hike descends through a dramatic ravine to the coast. La Palma, known as La Isla Bonita, features the Caldera de Taburiente, an enormous volcanic crater with trails through pine forests and past waterfalls. La Gomera's Garajonay National Park is a UNESCO-listed laurel forest shrouded in mist.
Ruta de las Caras (Cuenca)
This unusual trail near Cuenca passes 18 large sculptures and relief carvings created directly in rock faces along a lakeside path. It combines art, nature, and easy hiking in a 2-hour loop.
Coastal Walks
The Cami de Ronda follows the Costa Brava coastline in Catalonia, connecting hidden coves and fishing villages. The Senda Litoral in Asturias traces the Green Coast with ocean views throughout. Mallorca's Dry Stone Route (GR221) traverses the Serra de Tramuntana mountains with Mediterranean views.
Practical Hiking Tips
Always carry sun protection and plenty of water, especially in southern Spain. Mountain weather can change rapidly in the Pyrenees and Sierra Nevada. Spain's network of refugios (mountain huts) provides accommodation on multi-day trails, but book ahead in summer. Download offline maps, as mobile coverage can be limited in remote areas. Spring and autumn offer the best conditions for lowland hiking, while summer is ideal for the mountains.
